Tarot by the Monterey Coast: Kristen & Michael’s Wedding
The trick with wedding tarot is making it feel magical without making guests think they need to prepare a birth chart before sitting down.
For Kristen and Michael’s Monterey wedding, that looked like soft coastal blues, coral flowers, natural linen, gold accents, and warm candlelight as the evening settled in.
The setting already did most of the heavy lifting: coastal air, pale sky, sandy hills just beyond the terrace, soft blue tones, warm wood, and those slightly dramatic Monterey clouds that make everything look suspiciously cinematic.
My job was to create a tarot experience that fit into that world rather than interrupting it.

Starting with the wedding itself
For event tarot, I rarely want the table to look like I arrived carrying an unrelated little universe in the trunk of my car.
The colors, flowers, venue, and general mood of the celebration are always the starting point.
First, I discussed with the bride her vision for the wedding and then the event planner sent me a visual palette for inspiration.

For this wedding, the inspiration was distinctly coastal: soft blues, ivory, natural linen, and small bursts of warm coral-orange.
The floral arrangement became one of my favorite parts of the setup. Pale blue hydrangeas were paired with coral dahlias and tall white flowers, bringing together the ocean colors and the warmer accents from the wedding palette.
From there, everything else followed naturally.
A neutral linen runner kept the table relaxed. Gold candleholders and a small brass lamp added warmth as the evening got darker.

A tarot table guests could actually use
A beautiful table is nice. A beautiful table that makes sense to guests is better.
Alongside the tarot decks, I created question cards guests could browse before sitting down.
Instead of asking people to invent a profound question under pressure, they could simply pick up something that caught their attention.
Questions included things like:
What should I focus on next?
What does the next chapter of my life look like?
What should I know before making a big decision?
They were intentionally broad enough to work for almost anyone. The most popular question was about the next chapter in life, 2nd place - what should I focus on, and the top third was about the opportunity coming my way

At a wedding, guests arrive with every possible life situation. Someone is newly in love. Someone is changing careers. Someone is contemplating a move. Someone mainly came for the champagne and suddenly finds themselves wondering about the meaning of their entire life.
Tarot has range.

A quiet little moment inside a very full day
Wedding receptions are busy.
There are conversations, dinner, music, photographs, people reconnecting after years apart, and at least one person attempting to locate the place where they left their drink.
A short tarot reading creates something slightly different.
For a few minutes, a guest gets to sit down, choose a question, look at the cards, and have a conversation that is entirely about them.
Wedding tarot can be light, funny, thoughtful, practical, or occasionally surprisingly meaningful. The best readings meet people exactly where they are.
That small pause is what I love most about bringing tarot to celebrations.

When the sun went down
The setup changed completely after dark.
The pale coastal colors stayed, but candlelight and the little table lamp made everything warmer. The gold reflected the light, the crystal candleholder started sparkling, and the ocean-blue details looked deeper against the evening sky.
What had felt fresh and airy during the afternoon became intimate and almost salon-like at night.
Same table. Completely different mood.
That transition is one of the reasons I love styling tarot stations rather than simply bringing a deck and sitting wherever someone finds an empty chair.
The environment changes the experience.

Tarot that feels like part of the wedding
For Kristen and Michael’s celebration, the goal was never to create a giant “mystical” attraction.
It was to create a small, beautiful corner where guests could wander over, get curious, sit down for a reading, and then return to the party with a new thought or a story to tell.
The tarot station had its own personality, but it still belonged to the wedding.
That is always the balance I am looking for.
Beautiful enough to catch someone’s eye.
Personal enough to make them stay.
And integrated enough that it feels like part of the celebration rather than something dropped into the middle of it.
Monterey made a pretty good backdrop, too.
